James Alston

James Alston is a distinguished Jamaican-American entrepreneur, community leader, and philanthropist with a career spanning more than five decades. He serves as the Chief Executive Officer of McCall’s Bronxwood Funeral Home in New York, a community cornerstone he helped establish in 1966. Trained as an attorney, Alston was a young law graduate when he joined the founding of the funeral home, one of the first Caribbean-owned funeral services in the Bronx, which has since grown into a respected institution serving families with compassion and cultural understanding. Under his leadership, the business advanced through hard work and community trust, persevering without the backing of major financial institutions and becoming an integral part of the “village” it serves.

Beyond his professional achievements in the funeral industry, Alston has devoted his life to uplifting others through education, mentorship, and charity. He has spearheaded numerous community initiatives aimed at supporting youth and families in the Jamaican diaspora. Notably, Alston founded an annual Holiday Charity Dinner in the Bronx over 25 years ago, transforming what began as a small office gathering into a much-heralded community event that provides meals and gifts to those in need. This festive tradition, supported by local businesses and volunteers, exemplifies his belief in “giving back” and fostering compassion among neighbors. Alston’s philanthropic vision also extends to empowering young people academically. In celebration of McCall’s Bronxwood’s 50th anniversary, he led the effort to award $60,000 in scholarships to college-bound high school seniors and students already in college, far exceeding the initial goal and even contributing additional funds to the United Negro College Fund. Five outstanding students received $10,000 scholarships each, in an initiative so well received that community donors eagerly joined to expand its impact.

Alston’s dedication to community development has earned him widespread respect and recognition. He is lauded not only for his business acumen but also for his extraordinary service ethos. Over the years he has informally mentored countless young people, offering guidance and opportunities through his family-run business and community programs. His efforts have bridged the gap between the Jamaican community in New York and causes back home in Jamaica. The high regard in which he is held is evident from the accolades and congratulatory messages he received from leaders at every level – including letters from the Governor-General of Jamaica, prime ministers and other officials – during the funeral home’s golden jubilee celebrations. These commendations underscore Alston’s unique role as an ambassador of goodwill, linking the diaspora with Jamaica’s national interests.

Throughout his life, James Alston has embodied the principle of “service above self,” leveraging his professional success to benefit others. He continues to serve on local boards and participate in charitable endeavors that uplift the Caribbean diaspora community in New York. His unwavering commitment to charitable giving, mentorship, and community upliftment stands as a shining example of leadership grounded in humility and cultural pride. In August 2025, James Alston will be honored at the Jamaica Independence Gala with the Community Development & Philanthropy Award, a tribute to his lifetime of achievements and his profound contributions to the Jamaican community both in the United States and in Jamaica.
