New York, NY – The Jamaica Independence Gala returns to the Marriott Marquis in Times Square with a powerful message and mission: “Party with a Purpose.” This signature celebration of Jamaica’s 63rd Independence Anniversary, which takes place on Saturday August 23, is more than an evening of culture, music, and elegance, it is an opportunity to make a tangible impact on the lives of Jamaicans at home through carefully selected charitable causes.
This year’s theme, “Party with a Purpose,” reflects the Gala’s dual focus: inviting the Jamaican diaspora and friends of Jamaica to revel in the nation’s proud heritage while contributing to programs that transform lives. Central to this mission is the Jamaica Independence Gala Scholarship Programme, which funds full-tuition scholarships for final-year students attending tertiary institutions in Jamaica, including The University of the West Indies (UWI), The University of Technology (UTech), Sam Sharpe Teachers’ College, and the College of Agriculture, Science and Education (CASE).
“Completing the final year of college is often the hardest for students facing financial constraints,” said Consul General Alsion Wilson. “Too many bright young Jamaicans face the possibility of dropping out, even after years of dedication. Our scholarship program ensures that these students can cross the finish line, earn their degrees, and create a better future for themselves, their families, and our nation.”
In addition to the scholarships, the Gala will also support three other critical causes:
- The Jamaica Cancer Society – expanding breast cancer screening and public education to save lives.
- The Rita Marley Foundation Resource Centre for Girls – empowering young women through mentorship, skills training, and personal development.
- The Rose Town Foundation – fostering community development and youth empowerment through sustainable projects that revitalize neighborhoods and inspire future leaders.
Together, these charities reflect the Gala’s commitment to linking celebration with meaningful purpose.
Beyond philanthropy, the Jamaica Independence Gala is a spectacular evening of culture and entertainment. Guests will enjoy unforgettable performances by Skip Marley, Nadine Sutherland, Big Youth, and Sharon Marley, backed by Derrick Barnett and the Statement Band, with Road International providing music for a night of dancing and joy. The Gala will also honor distinguished members of the Jamaican diaspora whose work continues to uplift and inspire the nation.
The Jamaica Independence Gala invites all to join in this remarkable evening—celebrating 63 years of Independence, honoring Jamaica’s heritage, and helping the next generation of Jamaicans thrive. Together, we can meet the ambitious goal of raising $500,000 to $1 million for these worthy causes.
